About Essential Oils:
New to Essential Oils and Aromatherapy? Here's a little bit about where these potent oils come from and how they differ from other types of oils.
Essential oils are natural aromatic compounds which are found in the flowers, stems, roots, bark and other parts of plants. From these plants, the essential oils are extracted by a steam distillation process. The particular mix of chemical constituents are what give plants their distinctive smells, offering up their delicious and unique aromas. Practically speaking, these oils provide plants protection against predators and disease.
Unlike vegetable oils, Essential oils are not "oily" - they are not made up of fatty lipids or acids found in vegetable and animal oils. They are light, fat-soluble, but not water-soluble (as anyone can attest to if they've tried to blend essential oils with water). Pure essential oils vary in color, viscosity and taste.
Because pure essential oils are so potent, we always tell people that 'less is more' You need only a few drops of essential oil per teaspoon of carrier oil for use on the skin. One of the real joys of aromatherapy is in getting to know the essential oils through experimentation and blending. We hope you enjoy reading about our oils on this site and in some of the many excellent resource books available. We are always happy to answer any questions about our essential oils and about aromatherapy in general.
