Essential Oils For Halloween

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays, and this morning I woke up inspired to brew up new ways to incorporate essential oils into my day. I’ve compiled a quick list of some of my top choices:  warm and earthy oils that I think add perfectly to the ambience of Halloween.

My Favorite Essential Oils for Halloween:

Cinnamon: cinnamon sticks

When I think of warmth, cinnamon is the first essential oil that pops into my head. This spicy, energizing oil is intimately linked to the fall season and, as an added bonus, has antiseptic properties!

Frankincense:

Frankincense is a classic cold weather essential oil whose deep, mysterious aroma helps to create a mystical atmosphere that fits in nicely with Halloween.  Frankincense is also known for its grounding properties . . . so if your kids are driving you a little crazy from their sugar rush, frankincense might be able to bring you some peace.

Cypress:

Cypress is a calming oil with an invigorating, woodsy aroma.  It’s lovely smoky notes are reminiscent of evergreen and make it one of my favorites for the autumn season!

Orange:orange fruit

How could I not include orange on this list?  Orange essential oil reminds me of mulled cider and cozy evenings in front of a fire. It also has a richly sweet citrus smell which is energizing, cheerful and might conjure up thoughts of halloween candy.

Recipes and Inspiration:

Valerie Worwood’s The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy is rife with wonderful aromatherapy ideas.  She even has a section on Halloween!  She offers up the fun suggestion of of creating fragrant witches’ brooms with essential oils. Simply tie twigs into bundles and soak them in oils such as pine, cypress, or fir needle, diluted in water.  If your kids (or you!) are dressing up as a witch today, give this a try!

And now for a less fanciful suggestion:

If your kids are going trick or treating or if you’re planning on spending the evening on your porch passing out candy, you might be concerned about mosquitoes.  There are lots of natural mosquito repellents out there, but some of my favorite mosquito-repelling oils are Eucalyptus Citriodora, Lavender, Peppermint, and Cedarwood Atlas.  You can purchase our Skatter Bug Spray online or you can dilute some of these oils in water or carrier oil to create your own personalized mosquito repellent!

Finally, here are a couple diffuser blend recipes to get you into the halloween spirit:
