How to Get Rid of Mice (humanely)

Or FAQs about Mouse Away

  mouse away kit.jpg

Are you trying to get rid of mice without hurting them?  Do you want to avoid poisons and cruel traps?  Our Mouse Away products help to get rid of and repel mice without doing them any harm.  To learn how to use them most effectively, read on...

Mouse Away our line of natural mouse repellent products, are some of our most popular items, and over the years, we’ve fielded lots of questions, heard about all kinds of crazy situations, and tried to help hundreds of people who have battled with mice in their houses, RVs, cars and stores. In the process, we think we’ve developed a pretty good idea of what works best to help get rid of mice in different situations.

The first question we usually ask is: How bad is your situation?  Do you see the mice?  Do you find droppings everywhere or hear the scurrying of little feet at night?   Do you have any idea how they’re getting inside the house?

1.  If you have just an occasional visitor, in a contained area (like your kitchen, for example), here’s what we recommend to help get rid of your mice problem:

One or two packs of Mouse Away Solids (re-usable satchels) and a 2oz bottle of Mouse Away Concentrate (our blend of pure peppermint and spearmint essential oils).  The solids will come already saturated with the essential oils (the Mouse Away Concentrate), but every six to eight weeks, you’ll want to add another dropper-full to ‘refresh’ them. Toss the Mouse Away Solids into corners, underneath cabinets, and anywhere you think the mice might be settling in. The mice won’t like the smell of the Mouse Away, and should head for less minty accommodations.

Always make sure there isn’t a food source they can get to, as that will make it a lot harder to get rid of mice. One of our customers came up with the idea of tying a string onto any satchels you place in hard to reach areas, and that way, when you need to refresh your solids; simply pull on the string (saves a lot of squeezing into tight, spidery areas).

2.  Okay, but what if the problem is a little more serious?

If the mice aren’t contained in one area, for instance, you’ll have to get a little tougher. It’s helpful if you can figure out where they’re getting in, of course, and making sure there is NO food source nearby. After that, we recommend the Mouse Cubes, which are the trap and release mouse traps (humane mouse traps). Bait these with a little peanut butter on a cracker (or we offer a mouse bait), and place the food as far inside the trap as possible. Place the cubes wherever you think the mice are settling in—especially in dark areas such as beneath couches, desks etc. Mice also tend to run along the walls, so these would also be good places to try the traps, as well as anywhere you’ve found mouse droppings. You may have to do some experimenting.

A few tips on using the Mice Cubes:

One, smear a little peanut butter or bait on the swinging door, and then wipe it off completely. The odor will lure the mice toward the trap.

Two, we’ve had great reports from those who have tried the Mouse Bait with the traps. One customer called and said she’d actually caught two mice in the same trap at one time!

Three, the traps have air holes, but they are small, so it’s extremely important to check them often, at least twice a day, to prevent the mice from suffocating. Once caught, release them at least two miles away from your house, preferably in a wooded area, or the mice may just come right back.

Once you’ve caught your mice, it’s time to use the Mouse Away Solids and Mouse Away Spray to make the area as unpleasant as possible (to mice, anyway). While most humans like the smell of peppermint and spearmint, rodents simply do not feel the same way. They strongly dislike the smell of mint, and tend to steer clear. So, we recommend solids, concentrate to keep the solids strong-smelling, and the Mouse Away Spray to use around the baseboards, perimeter of your house etc, to discourage the mice from checking out your home or car as a potential new dwelling place.

Note: Don't get Mouse Away Concentrate or Mouse Away Spray on painted, varnished or other finished surfaces or on plastic.

Finally, if you’re just not sure what to get, our Mouse Away Kit was designed to have a little bit of everything to get rid of mice—one four pack of Mouse Away Solids, one 2oz bottle of Mouse Away Concentrate, one 8oz bottle of Mouse Away Spray, and two mouse cubes.

3.  If mice have gotten into your car, here are our suggestions: jew and spray 095.jpg

Use the Mouse Away Solids in the engine compartment (avoiding any direct contact with combustible surfaces, ie anything that gets hot) and inside the vehicle itself. A general recommendation would be two solids in the engine area, one in the trunk, and several in the body of the vehicle. We don’t recommend using the Mouse Away Spray on the outside of the car, as it may damage the paint, but it would be fine to use on the garage floors or outside the garage door.

Need more advice?

Don’t hesitate to call us (1-800-897-8330) if you’d like to discuss how to get rid of mice in your specific circumstances. We’re always happy to assist in whatever way we can, and to help you figure out what makes the most sense for your situation. One thing we always say is that mice are like people—they’re all different, and they don’t always react in the same way. We’d like to be able to guarantee that Mouse Away will take care of your problem, 100%, but because there are so many variables, it’s impossible for us to make that promise. What we can say is that we’ve had tremendous success over the years with the vast majority of our customers, and that if we think your situation is too extreme for our products, we’ll tell you so!

p.s. A lot of people ask us about repelling other creatures. While Mouse Away has sometimes been used to deter rats and squirrels, we have no evidence of it being useful against snakes, armadillos or bats. Sorry!
