Q: We sell your products at our store. A customer asks: 'What is good for arthritis topically?' What can she put into a bath to help relieve the pain and stiffness? Thank you for your time. Sincerely, S.J. @ Silver Heart Int'l A: Dear S., Thanks for your question. Essential oils can be used in a number of ways to help ease cases of both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid outbursts. Detoxifying oils like Cypress, Juniper and Lemon can be used in baths to help eliminate toxins. Pain killing oils like Chamomile, Lavender and Peppermint can also be used in a bath or combined with a carrier oil to make an ointment. (Note: some people are allergic to chamomile - use no more than 2 drops in a bath). Essential oil of Marjoram, Black Pepper, or Ginger can be added to carrier oils and massaged around joints to help increase circulation (but don't use Ginger or Black Pepper in a bath). When using Essential Oils in a both, you can use a single oil, or two or three. Use no more than five drops total and no more than three drops of any single oil (but, no more than 2 drops of Chamomile or Pepper in a bath). Mix the oils with a teaspoon of honey or cream before adding to the bath and be careful not to get in eyes. For an ointment, add a total of two drops essential oil to one teaspoon of carrier/vegetable oil (such as Sweet Almond Oil), and apply to affected joints two or three times daily. Note: We also make a premixed arthritis formula. Whenever heat is applied to a painful, stiff joint it is VERY important to gently move the joint as much as possible immediately afterward. Otherwise the heat will cause congestion which will make things worse rather than better. In my experience, dietary factors are very important in arthritis, so help your customer check out some references for this. Hope this helps.
